How to Set Up the H96 MAX Android TV Box (Step by Step)

The H96 MAX turns any TV with an HDMI port into a smart TV. Setup takes about 15 minutes. This guide walks you through it from unboxing to your first show.

What you need

  • The H96 MAX box, power adapter, HDMI cable and remote (all in the box)
  • A TV with a free HDMI port
  • A WiFi network or a network cable
  • A Google account (your Gmail works)

Step 1: Connect the box to your TV

Plug one end of the HDMI cable into the box and the other into a free HDMI port on your TV. Note the port number, for example HDMI 2. Connect the power adapter to the box and to a socket. Keep the box in an open space, not inside a closed cabinet, so it stays cool.

Step 2: Choose the right input on your TV

Turn on the TV and press the Input or Source button on your TV remote. Select the HDMI port you used. You should see the H96 MAX start-up screen within a minute.

Step 3: Pair the remote

Put the batteries in the remote. If the box shows a pairing screen, follow the instruction on screen. Most of the time the remote works straight away. Point it at the front of the box.

Step 4: Pick your language and connect to WiFi

Choose your language, then open Settings → Network. Select your WiFi name and type the password. If your router offers both 2.4GHz and 5GHz, choose 5GHz for smoother 4K streaming. Use the 2.4GHz network if the box is far from the router.

Step 5: Sign in to Google

Open the Play Store and sign in with your Google account. This lets you download apps and keeps them updated.

Step 6: Set the picture resolution

Go to Settings → Display. If you have a 4K TV, choose 4K (2160p). For a Full HD TV, choose 1080p. A wrong setting can cause a black screen or a blurry picture.

Step 7: Install your apps

From the Play Store, install the apps you use, such as YouTube, Netflix, Prime Video, Showmax or your IPTV app. Sign in with your own account for each paid service.

Tips for smooth streaming

  • Restart the box once a week to clear memory
  • Uninstall apps you don’t use
  • Keep the box away from heat and direct sunlight
  • For a slow connection, lower the video quality inside the app
  • Check Settings → System update from time to time

Common problems

No picture on the TV: check the HDMI cable and make sure the TV is on the right input.

Remote not working: change the batteries and point the remote straight at the box.

Video keeps buffering: move the box closer to the router, switch to 5GHz WiFi or use a network cable.
